today on the news i heard a certain sports team from a certain city met many fans at the airport who wanted to welcome their "hometown heroes."
what?
they make more money per arm twitch than most people make in a day. what did they do that was heroic? sorry sports fans, but i don't find all that much glory or excitement in professional sports. college and high school, yes, because the people playing are generally your peers (or were at one time.) but for real, what have i in common with a japanese guy that makes millions of dollars playing baseball? of course i also saw some footage from venezuela where people were cheering for the venezolano on the team.
and also - what is this "world series" crap? were there any cuban teams participating? any japanese teams? yeah, don't call it world series unless you include the rest of the world. i had an argentine.... AN ARGENTINE talking about how ARROGANT it is of us! that we're more arrogant than her compatriats! (to which i responded, well in that sense, yes.)
*************
am so tired - fortunately no children at work tomorrow! looking forward to a(nother) weekend of cutting and pasting! and yes i do recognise that it's "halloween weekend" but i don't really care. there are way many more things i could be doing than spending my free time willfully impaired and/or hungover. but if i change my mind i do have my costume from last year. i'm not sure i will though. and that is fine!
honestly i am not a sycophant. but at the inservice this afternoon i was always the first one to speak up, i was the first one to share a personal experience i've had as a learner, i also explained how i used one of their techniques today in the classroom (my highest reading group read about mars - the kids were so excited they didn't even realise what i had assigned for this weekend - to read the book and write some things they learned - was homework!) and of course the principal was there to hear me share these experiences. but hey, i'm just like one of my students - this is new territory for me and i am soaking up every pertinent bit of it. it's great to be interested in and excited about my job. it's not a job where i watch the clock counting down the minutes to when i leave, but rather checking the clock to make sure i don't stay too late!
had to work with Inflexible Lady (ie the non-spanish-speaking third grade teacher) this afternoon, but it was ok. she actually seemed to find the meeting interesting!
ok... must sleep...

They can call it the World Series because there are Canadian teams. The Toronto Blue Jays won in 1991 and 1992. There are also a TON of international players. Heck, look at the White Sox in your certain hometown. The majority of the team is foreign and they come here because it is the best place to play in the world.
Your Argentine is jealous that they pretty much have nothing except soccer and in the World Cup they have not faired well in recent years.
