audiobook geek

i have a confession to make:

i have become somewhat of an audiobook geek.

but, what else is there to do when one would rather not waste one's mind on MTV at the gym or when one would prefer to be reading but doing so a.) causes pain because migraines make me very sensitive to light or b.) could cause a car accident, bike accident, horse accident, etc.

and what else could i do all last week, while i took my time cleaning out the classroom? the radio was one of the first things i turned in, and i couldn't get the speakers on the computer to work (probably they've been dropped one too many times or suffered one too many infestations of scabies and/or lice)... but i still had a ton of cleaning and organizing to do. so i downloaded and burned to CD a book.

AND I ENJOYED IT THOROUGHLY!

it was "i am madame x" by gioia diliberto. it was about the portrait by john singer sargent that caused such a scandal in paris. well, it wasn't about the portrait in and of itself; rather, it was the author's SYNTHESIS (which is way up there on the order of thinking skills) of what the portrait's subject might have to say if she were to write a memoir. it was such an engaging story. it took up 10 cds. let's see... i listened as i worked out last week, as i layed out by the pool, as i lay in my bed waiting for the meds to work, as i swept the floor and took the computers apart in my classroom (not that i had to but friday morning before i came in, the room's next tenant had (the audacity!) already brought all her stuff in fresh new boxes and the janitors told me she was all ready to put everything in the room. luckily they stood up for me and helped her stack it outside the room in the hallway. so i took apart the computers so she could have some kind of clue of what she's getting herself into. and it's also kind of a test - if she can't plug the mouse, monitor, keyboard, power cords, etc, where they are supposed to be plugged, someone should be notified immediately.) of course i am not going to apologise for the amount of time i took to get the room cleaned up because i made sure the next teacher would find things in order and would not have to deal with the mess i had to deal with at the beginning of the year. how nice of me. of course if she gets stuck reassembling the computers, nothing i did is going to help her to be organized (i mean, come on, all the plugs are color-coded; how could one go wrong?)

it made the work go by so quickly. the audio book that is. because it was work where i didn't really have to think. it was time that could have otherwise been spent reading. i just did the next best thing.

though if given a choice, i think i would prefer to read because i'm a visual person so i would remember new words better.
