found this little tidbit on media matters:
COULTER: Right, but think about that. I mean, that -- that is why the Democrats will pick up seats this fall. The fact that anyone would vote for Democrats because gas prices were going up -- oh, OK, that's worth risking another terrorist attack. "I'm upset. Gas prices are high." No. Way too many people vote. We should have fewer people voting. There ought to be a poll tax to take the literacy test before voting.
ok mr. (yes, MR. - i felt i could only get you to listen to me if i put myself on the same level of your maturity) coulter, where do we start. first of all, your last sentence makes no sense - it makes me think you lack the understanding of what a poll tax is. like you should have to pay a tax to take a literacy test? aah, but this is the least of my concerns. i understand it was said on live tv and it's easy to get things confused when you're talking unscripted.
second, what about 2000, what about me? let miss e tell you a story. back in 2000 she was living in a bubble because of her involvement in a cult. she had been brainwashed to repeat, like an automaton, that abortion is wrong and we should vote for a candidate that felt that way too. so using your logic, this is what brainwashed miss e might have been thinking: "i think abortion's wrong. democrats are known for being pro-choice, so i'm going to vote for the republican candidate." and in effect, this is what happened. she voted based on ONE THING. but did she take into account the contradiction of a pro-lifer also being pro-death penalty? did she even know what other issues were being debated? DID SHE EVEN WATCH ANY OF THE DEBATES? NO. she allowed herself to be intellectually lazy and threw away her vote because if the candidate said something she agreed with, well then, that was good enough for her. i feel that this kind of reasoning is exactly the kind of reasoning to which you are referring with gas prices. someone is unhappy with gas prices (but conveniently gas is about a dollar cheaper than it was four months ago) so they're going to vote based solely on that one thing, without having any knowledge or understanding of OTHER issues that are more pertinent.
(should any young minds be reading this, miss eitel reminds you that it's important to reflect on and admit to your mistakes, as she has done here. her intellectual laziness was a mistake, from which she asks you to remember to learn)
so in a way, i agree with you. with one caveat: too many people vote WITHOUT THINKING. but this poll tax shouldn't be a literacy test. it should be a reasoning test to weed out the automatons among us. you know, to make sure people have brains and reasoning skills.
