conflicting addictions

we JUST got cable tv. i had forgotten how addicting it was. today i sat through three straight hours of VH1 shows - i love the 90s, 40 most shocking haircuts, and the fabulous life of paris hilton. now i know there is hardly anything good in these shows but they are SO ADDICTIVE! i finally pulled myself away and decided i would go to my other addiction - that is, the 800 page book i am reading. of course before i do that, i'll just write a few thoughts down. or maybe i'll go shopping, i do need more "party clothes" for this weekend (in DC visiting the ALC - so excited).

on fabulous life they mentioned how Ms. H gets all this stuff from designers for free because she is so popular right now that it's very good advertising. I should get free stuff from designers. not because i'm popular or a socialite or anything but because i am the link between people with mainstream style and people who suffer from the suburban Old-Navy-esque fashion retardation. i think it is because i am so "normal" that people see, oh she's doing it, it must be ok. an example (and i've had plenty of others). i cannot wear normal shoes to work right now because it is so incredibly cold and the ground is covered in snow, and they make me go outside with the kids to make sure they don't kill themselves during recess. the only feasible footwear one morning was my mom's UGG boots. though i chose them from a utilitarian standpoint and not to make a statement, people noticed. oh, those boots are SO CUTE! one girl said, and I thought, you're just saying that because you've seen people on TV and in magazines wearing them! yes, i am kind of a bitch. but then another girl (the Soccer Stealer, i'll tell about her later) stopped me in the hall another day when i was wearing them. ok, now, are those boots waterproof? are they warm? as if she were deciding wether to get herself some. then on friday Miss L asked me, are those actual UGG boots? and i kicked up my heel to show the label and reveal that yes, they are authentic. but they're from last season and my mom's, i clarified. i'm not sure if UGG boots are something i would actually buy myself. i mean now they're all in colors and everybody is wearing them or some knockoff of them (though i don't know why, they're not that expensive). kind of like the poncho thing - everybody and her little sister and her grandma was wearing them four months after i wore mine, so i stopped all together. anyhow, the ugg boots belong to my mom, so i don't really have to take responsibility for being a trend-follower. i just wear them because they are so warm. everybody else at my school will be wearing them because i wear them. which is why they should send me free ones!

so now i'm faced with a decision - more cable TV or more Tolstoy? the answer should be obvious, but i think i'll go shopping first.
