ok so i'm not exactly an elected official, but still a leader of some sort. i guess sometimes i forget the tangible difference that exists between my world and the world of the people i serve (so to speak). i went to an annual function to which one of my "constituents" had invited me. but i found i had nothing in common with anyone there. i couldn't think of anything to talk about (because i wasn't going to hang around with a group of eight year olds) with the mom and the aunt, and i didn't want to talk about anything that could be misconstrued or taken the wrong way.
basically i stepped into a different world. standing in the kitchen scooping ice cream i felt like i had nothing to talk about with the mom or the aunt. even normal "guest" manners i take for granted (such as offering your guest something to eat/drink upon his arrival) i noticed where not present. and there were TONS of double negatives being thrown around among the adults!
but i guess it helps me understand where my kids are coming from. b-town does tend to get like a bubble sometimes.
