and now i totally heart...
PLANTAINS!
it's amazing, something starchy that grows on a tree! and if you slice it very thinly you can fry it like potato chips! mmm i could eat me a whole fried plantain. and forget about its likeness to bananas. you might get the occasional whiff of banana-ish-ness, but then you look down at your starch-rimmed fingernails and bite into one of the fried plantain chips you've just pulled from the pool, and it is NOTHING like a banana!
i also love...
BLOOD ORANGES!
that's right, orange on the outside, BLOODY on the inside. for real, they really are deep red inside.

I ate a combo of blood orange and grapefruit at work... it was great. And I had plantains in DC. Also, I definitely wrote about "wintry mix" a couple months ago..... I bite my thumb at the wintry mix.
Plantains are great. You sound like a frigging host on the Food Network. They are rather easy to come by and the market and no fuss. The only thing that I don't like about fried plaintains is that they seem really really oily, and that's no fun. you should try grilling them in the summer.
As for blood oranges? Be lucky you're in a better climate than the midwest/east coast. It's freezing. Oh yes, blood oranges. Tasty, but hard to come by! You know what really kicks ass? Meyer Lemons.
i know you totally did write about wintry mix. i wasn't sure anyone would have the audacity to use that term in the southeast united states. apparently they've heeded this newest entry to the blacklist because this week they're predicting an "icy mix", which i guess is a little bit more descriptive. we'll see how long that term lasts.
and what is the appeal of meyer lemons?
meyer lemons are a cross between lemons and oranges. more sweet, less tart.
its really good to throw in dishes instead of a splash of lemon at the night.
like rice, couscous, some dressings, etc. its tasssty.
