spain, inane

what the fuck, spain?

i hate all this shit about "oh, skinny means unhealthy and if clothes are too small girls will feel fat and get eating disorders."

WHAT ABOUT US ALIEN PEOPLE WHO ARE NATURALLY SKINNY?

skinnygirl would have been banned from walking the runways in spain. was it not there they said that BMI of 18 was the minimum? well i'm 17.something.

I EAT!
I DON'T GAIN WEIGHT!

ya'll know i'm healthy! it's fucking hard enough to find clothes that fit me. will there soon be a niche market for minus sizes, where we'll only be able to find crap that looks bad and doesn't fit properly despite being scaled down? what about me - i'm too tall to be petite!

for real though, can y'all IMAGINE the EPIDEMIC we'll have on our hands when the GENETICALLY SKINNY people FEEL PRESSURE TO BE FAT?

perspective

miss e did not give much thought to the "madrid model ban" until this week... i finally got around to reading the october and november versions of vogue and w. in it i saw a general shun of the model ban.

miss e, after finding further information, would shun the ban as well. i finally found some "dimensions" which qualify and disqualify models from the
bbc

UN health experts recommend a BMI of between 18.5 and about 25, and some models may fall well below the minimum.

The Spanish Association of Fashion Designers has decided to ban models who have a BMI of less than 18.

in other words, miss e would have been banned from participating as well. (being generous by adding 0.25 inch to my height and maybe 1-2 lbs to my weight, i come up with a bmi of 17.8) and y'all know i am NORMAL i don't do ANYTHING to make myself this way - w or vogue had quoted a designer (i think it was dvf but might very well be wrong) who said something to the tune of, some girls are just THIN!

just because i'm thin, does that make me unhealthy? why don't you ask my doctor. i'm a lot healthier than people at the other end of the spectrum.

shoes for tomorrow, desde hace seis meses

check these shoes out and ask yourself if you've seen anything like them anywhere before.

ready? well, if you were me, you might have thought to yourself when you saw the picture of these shoes in Vogue... hmm those look like the ALPARGATAS i brought home from argentina the last time i was there (january 2006). oh, oh wait. (and as you dig into the short article) ahHA, the guy WAS in argentina when he had this idea!

and i sigh with satisfaction: only more reason for designers to try products on ME because everything i tend to notice and bring into my wardrobe (ok, closet) so strangely becomes something someone is trying to sell! like these shoes! like other examples that i can't name right now! and even though i laugh at the price of these shoes (US$38) and the fact that they cost more or less TEN TIMES what i paid for mine (AR$15 i think), i would still buy a pair. why? well with every pair you order, another pair is donated to someone who needs them. ingenious!

project dad, take II

which is, project dad will not be happening anytime soon. it's not like i didn't give him the time - keri was free all day tuesday so i told dad to pencil us in but "he couldn't." and i haven't seen him for like three days straight. so yes, i feel kind of bad for being gone for father's day, but i gave him the opportunity and he chose WORK over NEW CLOTHES! er, i mean, TIME WITH HIS DAUGHTERS! so i'll have to give him an IOU. besides he probably has no idea that i'm leaving for a few weeks on saturday. i can't say i didn't try.

project dad

so the school year wound down surprisingly quickly - with a godzilla-sized migrain and an explosion of STRESS!

ok i might feel a little bad about taking wednesday off (i felt so unprepared for the last day of school - i had to have students help me put the report cards in the envelopes - without "next year grade assignment:" filled in - i was not briefed on the criteria and please, keeping kids back a year is now taboo because if you do that your school will have an unacceptable AYP and since schools need $$$ to function, you'd better fudge the data to make your kids look like they're not being left behind. besides, it's kind of my "revenge" : i'm sure many of the parents of my students will be calling up the school and creating havoc for the principal. also, i didn't have the "class compliments" strips ready for the kids until about ten minutes before the final bell rang. i also had snaggletooth breathing down my neck as i wrote a recommendation for her child to be in a dual-language program. oh and let's not forget that when they were outside for extra recess (i needed the break and the other teacher was outside) one of my students was goofing around and ran into the corner of a bleacher so i had to go outside to get them and when there is a group of kids huddled around him, well, that's another five minutes taken away from saying goodbye to the kids... um and what else... i didn't get to say goodbye to half of them because it was super stressful and i went home after throwing up an hour after the kids left, leaving my uneaten lunch and full cup of tea along with my windows open. i decided to drop everything and go home because godzilla was stomping on every working neuron again and again and again, anytime there was any shift in blood pressure STOMP, STOMP, STOMP! i was pale and sweating and as i arrived at the office i met the principal and told her i had to go home, i'd just thrown up from a migraine; she offered to drive me home, i almost accepted but then decided against it b/c there probably wasn't anyone home... i left almost in tears, squeaking out "it's been a rough week.") but i was legitimately ill on tuesday - i was dizzy dizzy dizzy from not taking my meds and i finally got my hands on some tuesday evening so i might have stayed home regardless of if i had an appointment at the headache place or not.

i mean, the report cards, i admit, i could have done last weekend but i was a little too busy - cuddling and showering do take quite some energy.

today as i ate breakfast, i sat in front of the tv and discovered there was a "queer eye for the straight guy" marathon. my sister was watching with me. i kept going "awww..... AWW LOOK AT HER! SHE'S GONNA START CRYING! THAT IS SO CUTE!" etc., etc. she of course kept telling me "oh my god, that's so corny. you are such a dork!" this is probably the first time in a loooong time where i have thought of anything that show has to offer as "cute." i must be on a serotonin high.

so i was inspired. i have not spent much time with my dad because he seems to be a depressive kind of person. and i'm not sure what kind of person might enjoy awkward silences. but i was inspired by those fabulous five (even though with the end of will and grace, gay people on tv is nothing new. but still.) to makeover my dad - or at least his wardrobe. i mean, come on, this is the guy who wears two socks that don't match (like one sock burgundy and the other brown, the product of one sock being put in with the whites while the other stayed where it should) and argues that "the sock on my left foot matches my sweater, as does the sock on my right foot. therefore, algebraeically, the socks match!" so i told my dad that my sister and i were going to take him shopping and that he should pencil in a day for us to go. also inspired by the divorcee episodes of the british "what not to wear" i figure it's time for hime to get some updated clothes, ones that are not older than me. it's a new stage in his life, and he should enjoy it. and everyone knows when you look good, you feel good. so it's up to my sister and myself to convince him. so i found a way i can spend time with my dad - do something i like anyway, and have him be part of it, along with my sister. it should be fun.

don't turn (on) the LIIIIIIIIIIGHTS!

so yesterday i wanted to enjoy the steam room as i usually do - sitting on the top ledge furthest from the door with the LIGHTS OFF.

but as i approached the door, the LIGHT WAS ON!

now, i'm comfortable with my own body on display for others to critique, but i'm afraid of people thinking i am checking them out, so i usually sit with my towel open and my eyes closed. but it's so hard to keep my eyes closed with the lights on.

and the woman who was already inside had her towel wrapped around her.

so as not to disturb the "dress code" established by the first person in there, i felt obligated to leave my towel wrapped around me too.

hm. i stayed wrapped up so as to not make the first lady uncomfortable. but if i'm in there and someone else disrobes, i feel more comfortable doing so provided the lights are out.

with the lights on i just feel too visible and have a hard time getting into my little steamy bubble of personal mental space.

speaking of mental space. i'm going to go fill some with the words of Mr. Diamond before my show comes on.

hey nice shirt/pourquoi est-ce qu'on utilise un bidet?/reunidos!

pour se laver les pieds, of course!

with the summer heat and new shoes i was constantly asking myself this question and responding in the same manner as the above. who knows what kind of crap lies on the sidewalks of the streets and the subway of buenos aires? so, with new shoes creating blisters every time i go out i utilised the bidet quite often. i would come in off the street, wash my hands, then fill the bidet and wash my feet.

quite inventive, no? and yes i know that's not the real use for a bidet but it was either that or lifting my feet up to the sink and i didn't have the patience for that after a day of walking around on injured feet.

nice shirt, right? it was my xmas gift to him (my brother.) don't i have a good eye? it fit him perfectly. as we were leaving the bar of friday night's infamous reencounter, steeeevoooo had just re-entered (to save his friend from going home with "a girl he just met" and all that hand-wavey brainwash crap) and he said, "hey, nice shirt!" i jumped up in the air all giddy and said YESSSS!!!!!!!! i brought that to him from argentina, doesn't it fit perfectly???!

then he says, like a glove.

david d and i look at each other and bust out laughing. steeevooo wonders what's going on, we explain the inside joke:

well i have this one friend, alex, and he got something like a frisbee stuck on the roof of his house and he used this thing to get it down and when he got it down he said, "like a glove," but it didn't make any sense!

a while ago for some reason all my CDs disappeared. i have not been able to find them since. so, with each trip to south america i replace some and add some more to my small collection.

aah this time around i have been reunited with my favorite song almost ever. it's called completo incompleto by jarabe de palo. and i had also forgotten the one before it, which is also excellent, until i heard the lyrics:
...
pasion y ley
dificil mezcla;
agua y sed
serio problema

cuando uno tiene sed
pero el agua no esta cerca
cuando uno quiere beber
pero el agua no esta cerca

como quieres ser mi amiga
cuando esta carta recibas
un mensaje hay entre lineas
(bla bla bla because i forgot)

so why are 9 and 10 always the best tracks on the CD?

the lyrics to my favorite song will have to be searched for by the reader should s/he be so inclined.

my mom: yeah chris and amanda saw the ultrasound yesterday.
me: is that the lady with manhands?
my mom: why do you always say that?
me: because! i look at people's hands and hers are especially un-feminine.
mrs. s: what about my hands?
me: well i've never looked at your hands but they must be fine because otherwise i would have noticed.

for real though, she DOES have man hands. they're huge!
